Digital Laboratory

The Concept of a Digital Laboratory

Digitalization refers to the process of converting analog signals into digital signals, enabling the transmission and implementation of various information and functions through the representation and processing of digital signals. Digitalization primarily emphasizes the application of digital technology and the transmission of digital signals, serving as a means and foundation for informatization. It is not merely the digital representation of information, but rather a comprehensive, in-depth, and strategic transformation of workflows, business models, and organizational structures.

A digital laboratory refers to a laboratory that utilizes advanced digital technologies to digitize the experimental process, experimental data, and experimental results. A digital laboratory is a laboratory that conducts scientific research using digital technology and network platforms, fully or partially digitizing the experimental process, including experimental design, data acquisition, and simulation analysis. Digital laboratories are characterized by information resource sharing, a completely paperless environment, automated data acquisition, and intelligent analysis. This helps laboratories improve quality management methods, standardize laboratory management processes, enable big data analysis and application, and enhance user satisfaction with services. These numerous advantages make laboratory digitalization a growing trend.

A digital laboratory encompasses three aspects:

I. Digital Instruments and Equipment: Digital laboratories utilize digital instruments and equipment to collect, measure, and analyze experimental data. These devices can output data in digital form and connect and interact with computer systems.

II. Digital Experimental Operations: Digital laboratories employ digital operating methods, such as automated instrument control, data acquisition, and real-time monitoring, to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the experimental process.

III. Data Management System: Digital laboratories utilize data management systems to record, store, and manage experimental data. These systems automate data entry, backup, and sharing, providing data security and traceability.

Features and Functions of Digital Laboratories

The purpose of digital laboratories is to achieve improved quality and efficiency, reduced costs and increased profits, and innovative services throughout the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing.  They are characterized by shared information resources, a completely paperless process, automated data acquisition, and intelligent analysis. Their construction goals include improving quality management methods; standardizing internal laboratory management; automatic acquisition of equipment data; achieving widespread sharing of test data; supporting the analysis and application of laboratory big data; and enhancing user satisfaction with services.

Digital Management of Laboratory Resources: Digital management of testing projects and methods, digital management of equipment, digital management of laboratory personnel, and digital management of reagents and consumables;

Digital Construction and Management of the Laboratory Environment: Laboratory environment monitoring, network environment construction;

Digital Construction and Management of System Documents: Management elements, technical elements;

Digital Management of the Testing Process: Digitalization of testing applications, specimen collection, testing process (pre-analytical processing, data acquisition from testing equipment, quality control), test reports, information inquiry, and other business processes;

Digital Management of Laboratory Data: Construction of a laboratory data management platform, laboratory data security, and laboratory data analysis under big data.

Advantages of Digital Laboratories

Improved experimental efficiency: Digital laboratories can automate and intelligentize the experimental process, reducing the time and effort required for manual operation and improving experimental efficiency;

Reduced experimental errors: Digital laboratories utilize high-precision sensors and measuring equipment, which can reduce errors in experimental data and improve experimental accuracy;

Enhanced data sharing: Digital laboratories can store experimental data on the cloud or local servers, facilitating sharing and access by multiple users and improving data sharing capabilities;

Easier data analysis: Digital laboratories can automatically analyze and process experimental data, helping researchers better understand experimental results and propose new research ideas;

Configuration of a Digital Laboratory

A digital laboratory generally consists of measurement, acquisition, and processing equipment comprising sensors, data acquisition devices, computers, and related data processing software, along with corresponding experimental instruments. Computer-based real-time data acquisition using sensors and computer modeling and image analysis techniques based on computer data processing software are the two main technological pillars of a digital laboratory.

Digital-Laboratories

Calculator Hardware: Digital laboratories require a large amount of computer hardware to support experimental teaching and scientific research, including desktop computers, laptops, servers, switches, routers, etc.  The higher the specifications of this equipment, the better the experimental results.

Virtualization Platform: The virtualization platform of a digital laboratory includes virtual machines, operating system virtualization, etc. Through virtualization technology, multiple virtual machines can run different experiments simultaneously. Virtualization technology can improve laboratory utilization and reduce equipment expenditure, management, and maintenance costs.

Simulation Software: Experiments conducted in digital laboratories often require the use of simulation software. Different types of simulation software exist for different subject areas, such as circuit simulation software, numerical calculation software, multimedia simulation software, etc. Simulation software offers high repeatability and reliability, significantly improving experimental efficiency and providing valuable applications for certain hazardous experimental projects.

Testing Instruments: The most important part of digital laboratory equipment is testing instruments. Various types of testing instruments are essential for a digital laboratory, such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and logic analyzers. Testing instruments are the "eyes," "ears," and "hands" of the digital laboratory, capable of detecting and analyzing electrical signals, optical signals, sound signals, etc.

Data Acquisition System: The data acquisition system in a digital laboratory can obtain data from multiple sources and store it in a central location for subsequent analysis, processing, and use. It helps the laboratory quickly acquire data and filter and integrate it, reducing errors and redundancy. The data acquisition system has real-time acquisition, automatic storage, instant display, instant feedback, automatic processing, and automatic transmission functions, ensuring the authenticity, validity, real-time nature, and availability of the data.

Sensors: In addition to electronic equipment, digital laboratories require a large number of sensors to measure various physical, chemical, and biological parameters. There are many types of sensors, such as temperature sensors, humidity sensors, pressure sensors, photoelectric sensors, and biosensors. Sensors can convert various parameters into electrical signals, facilitating data analysis and processing in the digital laboratory.
